The safari jacket, a garment influenced by menswear, has become an iconic and timeless piece of women's clothing. It embodies a style that is both modern and casual. Famous thanks to Yves Saint-Laurent in the 60s, it embodies the strong and adventurous woman. Today, many clothes are inspired by the Saharan (pants, dress, shorts ...) including the combination for women. At ELLOZZE, we have imagined safari-jacket inspired jumpsuits and rompers for women, ideal for every time of the year and every type of occasion. Discover our capsule collection.
Sahara jumpsuit for women: a little history...
Before the appearance of women's safari jumpsuits, this "safari" style was in the form of a jacket. Originally, these were jackets that men wore when they went on safari. Becoming popular in the late 19th century, this garment is made of lightweight fabric (cotton or linen) in light colors, such as khaki or beige. Bandoliers, such as epaulets, stretch pockets and a belt or martingale, finished the garment. At the time, it was mainly worn by Western European soldiers, as a light uniform, ideal in countries with warm climates, as was the case in the colonies.
It is in the 50s that the Saharan jacket becomes a film accessory, especially in Hollywood. We see then actresses, like Ava Gardner, or actors, like John Ford, wearing a Saharan jacket in adventure films.
In the 60s, it will be the famous designer Yves Saint-Laurent who will really make the safari jacket, a feminine garment. Indeed, in his collections, we can see shirts, suits and the first dresses of Saharan inspiration for women. He then imposes the saharienne as an essential female summer accessory to his wardrobe. In 1968, during his spring-summer collection, Yves Saint-Laurent presents the first pants and suits inspired by the Sahara for women.
Later, in the 90s, the equally famous designer Azzedine Alaïa will revisit and modernize the saharienne in his collections, becoming an iconic garment in all its forms.
